  • These include saline, dextrose, combined dextrose/saline,Hartmann's solution
  • The dextrose component is rapidly metabolised by the liver
  • Giving 5% Dextrose is equivalent to giving water as an isotonic solution.
  • If Na not given then this will lead to hyponatraemia.
  • Usually the daily requirements are 2 x 1 L 5% Dextrose + 1 L of N-Saline each with 20 mmol K
