If this is a miscarriage, there is nothing medically that the patient or doctor can do to stop it
Threatened miscarriage | There is mild bleeding with little or no pain early in pregnancy but the os remains closed. USS shows fetal heart beat and pregnancy progresses. |
Inevitable miscarriage | There is heavy bleeding and clots with some pain early in pregnancy and the cervix is open, which means that miscarriage and loss of pregnancy will happen. |
Incomplete miscarriage | This is bleeding and clots when a miscarriage has started but there is still some tissue left in the uterus and the cervix is usually open. Ultrasound scan confirms presence of products of conception with evidence of non-viability. |
Complete miscarriage | Heavy bleeding and clots and significant pain. The pregnancy has been lost. The uterus is empty and your cervix has closed. Ultrasound scan confirms an endometrial thickness of less than 15 mm. |
Delayed or missed miscarriage | There is no fetal heartbeat. There was no bleeding and no tissue loss. Mild pain and some brownish discharge. Cervical os is open. Pregnancy tests may be positive. No clinical feature of miscarriage however the ultrasound scan confirms absence of a viable pregnancy. The fetus can still be seen in the uterus and is small for dates. |
