Cystic hygroma | Congenital slow growing trans-illuminant swelling due to an abnormality with lymphatic channels. It can be seen to increase in size during coughing or crying. |
Thyroid goitre | Graves Disease with an enlarged thyroid. A thyroid scan will show increased up take of Iodine. |
Thyroglossal cyst | A remnant of the thyroglossal duct between the isthmus of the thyroid gland the foramen caecum of the tongue base. Moves with the swallowing and tongue as it is attached to the hyoid bone. Treatment is by Sistrunk's operation (excision of the entire cyst with a small central segment of hyoid bone and any ductal connection to the tongue base) |
Infectious mononucleosis | Due to Epstein-Barr virus usually cause pharyngitis and cervical lymphadenopathy in older children and young adults. Mono spot (heterophile agglutination) test is positive |
Carotid body tumour | has been called a glomus tumour and chaemodectoma. Occur at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery and cause the bifurcation to splay. The carotid body tumour are largely asymptomatic and present as a mobile, non-tender, growing, lateral neck mass. They may rarely release catecholamines. Treatment involves surgery, embolisation or gamma knife irradiation. |
