Multisystem inflammatory disease caused by the spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi.
Stages of Lyme disease | ||

Stage 1: | Early localised disease | Spirochetes multiply and spread in the dermis at the site of a tick bite. Usually within 1 month of infection. Pale centre and expanding redness - Erythema migrans. fever, malaise, headache, fatigue and Lymphadenopathy. last 1-3 months |
Stage 2: | Early disseminated stage | secondary skin lesions, lymphadenopathy, joint pains, myalgia, carditis causing conduction blocks (commoner in US) which are usually temporary not requiring pacing- needs ECG or 24 Hr tape if symptoms, pericarditis, myocarditis, nerve lesions e.g. Unilateral or Bilateral VII palsy which tends to last a few months, lymphocytic meningitis, peripheral neuropathy, radiculopathy |
Stage 3 : | Late Lyme | Destructive chronic "lyme" arthritis usually of large joints and mild to severe encephalitis and dementia, Acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans commoner in Europeans, Neuropathy |
