There are several mechanisms through which drugs can cause patterns of liver damage. The liver problems may just be a slight increase in transaminases which requires no action or acute liver failure. They rarely cause chronic disease.
Cholestasis | Chlorpromazine causes a hypersensitivity reaction and occurs with 1% of patients within 4 weeks of starting drug, High dose OCP |
Mixed hepatic/cholestatic hepatitis | NSAIDs, Co-Amoxiclav, Statins |
Acute hepatitis | Anti-tuberculous e.g. Isoniazid and rifampicin, Paracetamol overdose, Methyldopa, Atenolol, Halothane |
NASH | Amiodarone, Tamoxifen, Tetracyclines, Sodium Valproate |
Venous obstruction | Busulphan, Azathioprine |
Fibrosis | most notably Methotrexate |
