Chronic, tropical, nonvenereal spirochetal infections spread by body contact. Bejel is a Bedouin term for this nonvenereal treponematosis, which occurs primarily in the seminomadic tribes who live in the arid regions of North Africa, Southwest Asia, and the eastern Mediterranean.
