Femoral Shaft Fracture |
- Severe pain and swelling in the thigh
- Inability to bear weight or move the leg
- Visible deformity or shortening of the leg
- Potential for hypovolemic shock due to blood loss
|
- X-ray of the femur (AP and lateral views)
- CT scan if further assessment is needed for complex fractures
|
- Surgical fixation with intramedullary nailing or ORIF
- External fixation in cases of open fractures or severe soft tissue injury
- Rehabilitation with physical therapy after surgical stabilization
|
Intertrochanteric Femur Fracture |
- Hip pain and inability to bear weight
- Leg may appear shortened and externally rotated
- Common in elderly patients following a fall
|
- X-ray of the hip (AP and lateral views)
- CT scan for surgical planning if necessary
|
- Surgical fixation with a dynamic hip screw or intramedullary nail
- Early mobilization with weight-bearing as tolerated post-surgery
- Physical therapy for functional recovery
|
Tibial Shaft Fracture |
- Pain and swelling in the lower leg
- Inability to bear weight
- Visible deformity in displaced fractures
- Risk of compartment syndrome in severe cases
|
- X-ray of the tibia/fibula (AP and lateral views)
- CT scan for complex or intra-articular fractures
|
- Non-displaced fractures: Cast or brace immobilization
- Displaced fractures: Intramedullary nailing or ORIF
- Frequent monitoring for signs of compartment syndrome
- Rehabilitation with physical therapy after healing
|
Patellar Fracture |
- Pain and swelling over the knee
- Inability to extend the knee or perform a straight-leg raise
- Palpable defect in the patella
|
- X-ray of the knee (AP, lateral, and sunrise views)
- MRI if soft tissue injury or ligament damage is suspected
|
- Non-displaced fractures: Immobilization in a knee brace or cast
- Displaced fractures: ORIF with tension band wiring
- Physical therapy for range of motion and quadriceps strengthening
|
Ankle Fracture |
- Pain, swelling, and bruising around the ankle
- Inability to bear weight on the affected side
- Visible deformity in severe fractures
|
- X-ray of the ankle (AP, lateral, and mortise views)
- CT scan for complex or intra-articular fractures
|
- Non-displaced fractures: Cast or boot immobilization
- Displaced fractures: ORIF with plate and screw fixation
- Rehabilitation to restore ankle function and strength
|
Femoral Neck Fracture |
- Severe hip pain and inability to bear weight
- Leg may be shortened and externally rotated
- Common in elderly patients with osteoporosis
|
- X-ray of the hip (AP and lateral views)
- MRI if occult fracture is suspected
|
- Non-displaced fractures: Internal fixation with screws
- Displaced fractures: Hip hemiarthroplasty or total hip replacement
- Early mobilization and physical therapy post-surgery
|
Calcaneal (Heel Bone) Fracture |
- Severe heel pain and swelling
- Inability to bear weight
- Bruising extending to the ankle
|
- X-ray of the foot (AP, lateral, and axial views)
- CT scan to assess fracture severity and for surgical planning
|
- Non-displaced fractures: Cast immobilization
- Displaced fractures: ORIF for joint involvement or severe displacement
- Rehabilitation with gradual weight-bearing after healing
